Henry Clay, Abandoned 12th Century Church, Dorset, England

IMG_1428.JPG

This is the inside of a church; it didn’t have a roof or door.  Nine hundred years ago, it was built in a valley near the ocean; almost no other buildings are around it, and at first, we were trying to figure out why it would have been built so far from any civilisation.  Then I realised that it was not built away from other buildings – the other buildings, little mud and thatch hovels, had all disintegrated, and it wasn’t far away from civilisation – civilisation had just left it.  The stone bones of the structure still stood; everything organic had been destroyed.  Glory to the builders.
