Starting out

In Sri Lanka, the train stations have orchids in pots.  They have banana trees and coconut palms.  They have giant red calla lilies and ferns and plumerias and jasmine flowers and a thousand other tropical plants just growing up between the cracks, out of spare bits of earth, perfuming the air as you pass by, just reminding you of how well Nature can take care of itself. The plants form a canopy of the tropics that, try as they might, Disney and EPCOT could never reproduce.

I wonder if Sri Lankans, upon arriving in London for the first time, stare at the rail stations in Surrey and write home breathlessly to say: “These people have giant rose bushes growing everywhere, even by the railway stations!”
