During the Vietnam-American War, the Vietnamese set up a hospital for soldiers in a giant cave in Halong Bay. The pictures I took of the inside were terrible because the lighting was so poor, but this was the view out the back.
No country can lay claim to having a spotless history, and no country has ever been ruled by better angels. As an American, it makes me grimace to think that America’s history has been particularly ignoble. What we CAN do: try to do better in the future, and in the present.
